Weather Update: Eid Al-Adha is Likely to be Marred Due to Heavy Monsoon Rains

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts that the current heat wave will likely end on June 25. Upper and central parts are likely to experience pre-monsoon rains with dust thunderstorms from June 25 to June 30 with sporadic gaps.

The latest PMD advisory states that moist currents from the Arabian Sea are entering the upper and central parts of the country and that a westerly wave is likely to enter the upper parts of the country on June 25.

From June 24 (night) through June 30, with sporadic breaks, rain/wind-thundershower (with a few heavy falls) are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Chitral, Swat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Kurram, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Kohat, Mianwali, Sargodha, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahaudin, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh.

Barkhan, Loralai, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Kalat, Khuzdar, Zhob, Ziarat, Musakhel, D I Khan, Karak, Waziristan, D G khan, Rajanpur, Multan, Bhakkar, Layyah, Kot Addu, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Okara are also predicted to experience rain/wind-thundershowers with sporadic heavy falls from June 26 to June 29, as well as Sukkur, Jacobabad, and Larkana on June 27 and 28.

During the forecast period, the prevailing heat wave conditions are likely to abate. On June 26 and 27, areas that are prone to landslides include Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, and hilly regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On the same days, low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, and Lahore may experience urban flooding.

On June 27, intense rain may result in flash flooding in the hill torrents of DG Khan and neighboring regions of northeast Balochistan.
