It might be terrifying to get a bill that is more expensive than you anticipated. Imagine, however, that you get a £16,000 (more than Rs. 49 Lakh) water bill and are informed that there was no administrative error. Claire Fitzpatrick, a Welshwoman from Bridgend, experienced just that. The mother of two was shocked by the enormous cost after a water leak remained unnoticed for several months. The creator of beauty products only recently settled into her house. The amount she owed Welsh Water, however, had unexpectedly and significantly increased to four figures by the summer.
According to Claire Fitzpatrick, who spoke to Wales Online, “I was gobsmacked – people must think I’m operating a waterpark in the backyard.” Claire described what happened in detail. She stated, “I initially noticed there was a problem when my bank informed me that my monthly direct debit had increased. I couldn’t believe it when I called Welsh Water and was told that my overdue debt was £3,823.27 (more than Rs 11 lakhs). “After that,” she said, “an engineer came over and said he’d been looking around and thought there was a leak someplace. Then I was informed that they had been unsuccessful in finding it and that my driveway would likely need to be dug up.
Her problems did not end there. In actuality, it was only the start. In August, Claire went on vacation and upon her return, she saw something that no one would want to see after a well-earned rest. There was a sizable hole outside her property. The water company was given instructions to dig further in a blue spray paint can nearby, but they were still unable to find the leak. They gave it two more tries, but the problem was still unsolved. Meanwhile, Claire was shocked to receive a charge for £15,833.11 every six months (approx Rs 48.76 lakh)
Claire Fitzpatrick stated that Welsh Water had advised her that she would be responsible for paying a private contractor to find the leak if they were unable to. Her account is currently frozen while the best line of action is decided, and there have even been negotiations about a payment schedule. Claire said she couldn’t afford to pay back about £16,000 and voiced amazement at the suggestion.
