On the Altar Knotto trail in Rotzo, a town in the province of Vicenza, Italy, the 30-year-old Andrea Mazzetto was hiking with his girlfriend, Sara Bragante, when the horrifying incident took place.
The couple is seen smiling and posing in a heartbreaking photograph taken just before the tragedy, just before Mazzetto fell while attempting to reach for his phone at the edge of a 300-foot ravine.
Local media said that while first it was thought the phone belonged to Bragante, it was later determined to be Mazzetto’s.
Mazzetto, a businessman and fitness enthusiast, lost his balance and fell off a cliff on a hiking trail around 2:00 on Saturday.
A team of firefighters, alpine rescue police, and a medical team were sent to the scene when Bragante, who was apparently in shock, called emergency services.
The body of Mazzetto was found using a helicopter.

On that particular day, the couple had been posting pictures of their ascent up the hiking trail on their Instagram stories, and Bragante had posted one final picture of the two of them before she deleted her account.
“Our last damn photo together,” the message said.
