After finding his father’s loaded firearm in his pickup truck, a little child in North Carolina sadly lost his life last month after inadvertently shooting himself in the head.
Just before six o’clock on October 15, police went to allegations of a shooting at a residence in Benson and discovered two-year-old Warren Bennett Oser with a gunshot wound to his head.
According to the prosecution, the young youngster entered his father’s pickup truck through an open door and discovered the loaded Smith & Wesson there.
in the front seat was a 40-caliber handgun.
Then, as he was fiddling with the gun, he unintentionally shot himself in the head.
Prosecutors claim that both of the boy’s parents were present. He was immediately taken to Johnson Medical Center Clayton, where he was later declared dead.
The Johnston County District Attorney’s Office reported on Monday that the boy’s father, Tyler Oser, will now be charged with failing to properly and securely stow his firearms to protect minors.
‘My heart goes out to the parents as they grieve the loss of their son,’ District Attorney Susan Doyle said in a statement.
She added, though: ‘These tragedies are 100 percent preventable by safely storing all weapons away from minor children, as required by statute.
‘This is not about the rightful ownership of guns,’ Doyle noted. ‘This is about the responsibility of gun owners to protect minors by ensuing weapons are kept safely away from children.’
Family members met at the Oser family home in Benson after the shooting to support Tyler and Emily, the couple’s parents.
‘We’re having to raise money for a funeral we never expected, for a 2-year-old,’ one family member told WRAL News.
A GoFundMe established to assist the parents has so far earned more than $22,000 for the bereaved family.
