Ichigo Momomiya, a little girl from Tokyo, Japan, is central to the anime’s storyline. Together with her “crush,” Masaya Aoyama, she attends an exhibition on endangered species. Following a tremor, Ichigo and 4 other girls entered a shadowy light. A cat appears in front of Ichigo before blending in with her. She started acting like a cat and telling cat jokes the next day.
After visiting Ryou Shirogane and Keiichirou Akasaka, Ichigo learns that she has been contaminated with DNA from the Iriomote cat. Ryou and Keiichirou claim that this enables her to transform into the strong, valiant cat girl Mew Ichigo. Defeating Chimera Animas, extraterrestrial space parasites that infect creatures and turn them into monsters, is her assigned mission. Ichigo is instructed by Ryou and Keiichirou to find the remaining 4 Mew girls in the exhibit.
