When someone finally dials a phone number that never rings, you know something bad has happened.

The Night Agent, an upcoming action drama series starring Gabriel Basso as an FBI agent working in the basement of the White House, whose sole responsibility is to man an emergency line that never rings, until now, is set to premiere. The call sets off a chain of events that could endanger the Oval Office and the people who work there.

Here’s everything we know so far about The Night Agent, brought to you by the creator of S.W.A.T.

‘The Night Agent Trailer

On February 8, 2023, the teaser trailer for The Night Agent was released. The following is the official synopsis, as well as a teaser:

“Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, the series is a sophisticated, character-based, action thriller centering on a low-level FBI Agent who works in the basement of the White House, manning a phone that never rings — until the night that it does, propelling him into a fast-moving and dangerous conspiracy that ultimately leads all the way to the Oval Office.”

The Night Agent follows an FBI agent who has the unfortunate experience of working a low-level position in one of the country’s most secure establishments. His job is straightforward: he manages a phone line for undercover spies in the White House basement. The only problem is that the phone never rings. At this point, he is questioning his life choices when the phone rings, sparking a series of dangerous events and revealing a deadly conspiracy lurking beneath the Oval Office.

Matthew Quirk’s bestselling novel of the same name serves as the basis for the series. Shawn Ryan, the novel’s creator, picked up the novel right at the start of quarantine in 2020, eventually becoming a huge fan of it.

“If you like the Jack Ryan books, the Jack Reacher books, if you like the Bourne Identity stuff, if you like political intrigue, then The Night Agent is for you.”

The Night Agent is a political thriller novel written by Quirk about FBI Agent Peter Sutherland, who is stationed in the White House basement and keeps a phone line for undercover operatives that never rings. One fateful night, the phone rings, triggering a chain of events that reveals a massive conspiracy involving a Russian mole at the highest levels of the US administration. Peter must go on a desperate chase and break the rules to catch the traitor and save the country, all while questioning everything and trusting no one. The novel has been compared to the early works of John Grisham and David Baldacci, and the series appears to be in the same vein as recent hit shows such as Reacher and The Recruit.

The Night Agent is only available on Netflix. If you haven’t already signed up for the streaming platform, you can choose from the following plans: *Basic with ads ($6.99/month), Basic ($9.99/month), Standard ($15.49/month), and Premium ($19.99).

Shawn Ryan, an Emmy nominee, is in charge of the show’s development and also serves as one of its executive producers and showrunners. Ryan is no stranger to creating thrilling action drama series, with credits ranging from The Shield to S.W.A.T.

Later, on July 21, 2021, Netflix announced that the show would be acquired by the streaming service. The show’s production was supposed to begin in January 2022, but it was later pushed back. Filming eventually began on February 14th, 2022, in Vancouver and Los Angeles, with a production duration of 6 months and a completion date of July 15th, 2022.

Who’s in the Cast of The Night Agent?

Gabriel Basso plays Peter Sutherland, a promising young FBI agent who is assigned one of the most boring jobs in the organisation: waiting for the phone to ring. As he spends his days in the White House basement, Peter wonders if he’s squandering his time and potential… Until one night the phone rings. Within seconds, Peter is dragged into a conspiracy that threatens the very sanctity of the Oval Office while protecting a terrified civilian. Prior to this project, Basso appeared in the Oscar-nominated, but highly divisive, film Hillbilly Elegy.

Luciane Buchana, who plays Rose Larkin, the civilian who calls Peter, joins Basso. Rose, a down-and-out tech entrepreneur, is staying with her aunt and uncle. However, things take a dark turn when assassins target her relatives. With few options, she dials the mysterious phone number provided by her aunt and uncle, eventually gaining a newfound protector and uncovering unwanted family secrets. Buchana appeared on The New Legends of Monkey for two seasons.

Hong Chau (The Whale) takes on the role of Diane Farr, a White House chief of staff who takes Peter under her wing and is a loyal friend of the president. Fola Evans-Akingbola (Siren) plays Chelsea Arrington, a Secret Service agent in charge of the vice president’s daughter’s safety. D.B. Woodside, best known for his recurring role in Lucifer, plays Erik Monks, another Secret Service agent seeking redemption within his organisation.

Eve Harlow (The 100) plays Ellen, a serial killer whose impulses know no bounds, Phoenix Raei (Clickbait) as Dale, Ellen’s professional killing partner and love interest, Sarah Desjardins (Yellowjackets) as Maddie Redfield, the vice president’s daughter, Robert Patrick (Peacemaker) as Hawkins, and Enrique Murciano (Without a Trace) as Ben Almore, the head of the Secret Service.
