The Arab League is made up of countries from the Middle East and Africa as well as the Palestine Liberation Organization. The participants are encouraged to form closer political, economic, cultural, and social ties. The Arab League declared on Sunday that Syria had been re-admitted after an unusual meeting at its headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, after an 11-year absence. The re-entry is effective right away after Syria was stopped amid a bloody crackdown on anti-government rallies.
“As of this evening, Syria joins the Arab League as a full member, and as of tomorrow, they are welcome to all meetings.
“Assad can go if he wants to when the host nation, in this case Saudi Arabia, sends the invitation”
Gheit went on to say. According to officials and commentators, while only symbolic, Syria’s readmission into the Arab League has the potential to facilitate Assad’s international rehabilitation and possibly enable the lifting of crippling sanctions against his dictatorship.
Syria has been subjected to crippling Western sanctions for years, the most recent of which was the United States 2019 Caesar Act, which imposed harsh penalties and barred people, businesses, and governments from engaging in economic activity that aided Assad’s war effort.
The entire economy became untouchable as a result. According to the UN, Syrians are currently dealing with levels of poverty and food insecurity that have never been seen before. According to the World Food Program, more than 12 million Syrians, or more than half of the country’s population, are anticipated to experience food insecurity by 2022.
