What is a solar eclipse?
When the Moon and Sun align in the sky so that the Moon completely obscures the Sun’s face, this is referred to as totality and is when a total eclipse occurs. These happen somewhere on Earth around every 18 months.
But because the Moon’s shadow follows a precise route across the Earth’s surface, not everyone can always see totality. Any given point on the Earth is only likely to experience this approximately once every 375 years.
Location and the presence of clear sky are the two main factors that determine whether you can see a total solar eclipse (or at least patchy clouds). You will probably witness numerous partial solar eclipses from your location over the years, notwithstanding the rarity of totality. Get ready and know what to anticipate if you’re fortunate enough to be in the path of a total or partial eclipse.
