Due to the preparations for the upcoming local body elections, all educational institutions in Hyderabad and Karachi will be closed on Saturday (tomorrow).
“The public and private institutions under the Administration of School Education and Literacy Department of respective districts will remain closed on Saturday,” a notification issued by the School Education and Literacy Department said.
The College Education Department also stated in a separate notification that “Saturday (January 14) is declared public holiday in all the public and private educational institutions under the administrative control of the College Education Department” due to the local government elections phase-II in the divisions of Karachi and Hyderabad.
The local body elections will take place in the two districts after numerous difficulties, since they were postponed four times for various reasons, with floods being a key one.
The Sindh administration requested that the elections be delayed, but the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) decided on Friday to proceed with the scheduled January 15 local government elections in Hyderabad and Karachi.
On July 24 of last year, the second round of LG elections was supposed to be held, but the Sindh government cancelled them due to a lack of police and security due to flooding. The polls were later postponed on August 28, October 23, and today, with the announcement for January 15 making it the fourth postponement.
