The Agriculture, Supply & Prices Department of the Sindh government has established a clear baseline to support its position on the upcoming sugarcane crushing season for 2023–24. The department has set a clear minimum price of Rs. 425 per 40 kg for sugarcane.
This directive requires the province’s sugar factories to set up a quality premium payout system for cane farmers at the conclusion of the upcoming crushing season.
For every 0.1 percent (inclusive of fractional proportions to be prorated) of excess sucrose recovery above the threshold of 8.7 percent, a premium rate of fifty paisa per 40 kg has been established. This benchmark, which is based on the overall sucrose recovery scale for each mill, highlights the government’s commitment to rewarding excellence and high-quality yield in the sugarcane sector.
It should be noted that while the move will give farmers fair prices for their crops, it will also cause sugar prices to rise further in the coming weeks. Retail sugar prices are already at record highs of Rs. 150 to Rs. 170. In 2022–2023, 1.3 million hectares of sugarcane were planted, yielding a record 91 million tons of sugar, representing a 4% and a 2.8 % increase over the prior years, respectively.
