The girlfriend of a 15-year-old student who was fatally stabbed outside a school in Huddersfield has described how her heart was “shattered” when her friend told her about the attack.
Shyana James, 16, was attending Kirklees College in Huddersfield when she got a call from a friend informing her of her boyfriend’s terrible fate.
The 15-year-old Khayri McLean was fatally stabbed on Wednesday in front of North Huddersfield Trust School in Fartown. Since then, a 16-year-old has been detained on suspicion of killing him.
Shyana and Khayri had been dating for six months, she said: “My friend phoned me and told me what had happened. My heart was just shattered. She said: ‘Your boyfriend has been hurt.’
“I phoned a taxi firm and when I got to the scene it was all taped off. I saw him lying there with paramedics around him. I went to Leeds General Infirmary with my mum.
“We have been dating for six months and he was a really nice boy. He had just started playing football and enjoyed it.”
Shyana’s mother said her daughter described him as “the perfect boy”. Sherrin James, who left flowers at the scene in Huddersfield, said the pair were “literally inseparable”.
“He was her first proper boyfriend,” Sherrin said. “She absolutely adored him and he absolutely adored her.” A card addressed to “Kharyi” was left with the floral tributes outside the North Huddersfield Trust School, while a GoFundMe page has been set up to give Khayri “the best send off”.
