JOE CORDINA has the opportunity to regain the IBF super featherweight world championship he lost last year in a contentious decision.
Cordina won the IBF super featherweight title last year after striking out Kenichi Ogawa in round two with a powerful right hand.
The Welshman had an agreement with the IBF that the victor of the fight with Ogawa would meet Rakhimov in a mandatory championship defence in September of this year.
However, Cordina sustained a hand injury during training, preventing him from facing Rakhimov, for whom the IBF originally awarded medical extensions. However, the crown was taken away from him when he needed surgery.
While many thought it was a harsh decision, Rakhimov went on to defeat Zelfa Barrett and capture the empty title.
Most people will consider Cordina to be the favourite in his attempt to regain the title. However, both competitors are undefeated, and Rakhimov will be hoping to create an upset by defending his championship in Wales.
