In a gunfight with police on a California highway Tuesday, a 15-year-old girl and her kidnapper father were both slain, according to officials.
On Interstate 15 in Hesperia, Savannah Graziano was attempting to flee from San Bernardino County sheriffs while wearing tactical gear as the cops opened fire at her father, Anthony John Graziano, who is wanted for the murder of Savannah’s mother.
Police did not specify whether the officers or the girl’s father had fired the shots during the early shootout that killed the girl.
Sheriff Shannon Dicus of San Bernardino County suggested Savannah may have been behind some of the rounds that were fired.
“There may be some indications that the passenger of the vehicle which we believe is Savannah may have been involved in some of the fire exchange,” Dicus said at a press conference, calling the case “highly complex.”
“There may be some information that the passenger was involved in firing back at the deputies and we’re still trying to confirm that at this point.”
After being transported to a hospital, Savannah was declared deceased. Police announced on Twitter that her father had died at the scene.
Due to the vast region where shots were fired, police stated that it will take “at least 24 hours” for new information to surface.
Since Monday morning, Graziano has been on the run after being accused of fatally shooting his wife Tracy Martinez in Fontana, California.
