The police’s request for permission to issue arrest warrants for senior journalist Ayaz Amir and his wife in connection with the killing of Canadian-born daughter-in-law Sara Shahnawaz was accepted by a local court in Islamabad.
Following a Friday argument over a “family matter,” senior journalist Ayaz Amir’s son Shahnawaz is accused of killing his wife Sara in their home.
Shahnawaz admitted to the crime and claimed that he “thought” his wife was having an affair with another person when he was detained by the police from the farmhouse in Islamabad’s Chak Shahzad neighbourhood.

The investigating officer informed Mubashir Hassan Chishti, a civil judge, that the suspect “killed his wife in cold blood” when the defendant was brought before him today.
During the hearing, the police asked the judge to order Shahnawaz to be physically detained for questioning for ten days.
Shahnawaz’s attorney responded that since it was a “blind murder,” they support the police’s plea for remand.
He claimed that the case is currently supported by “only claims,” nonetheless.
Additionally, the police also submitted a petition to get Shahnawaz’s fingerprints and request that warrants for his parents’ arrest be approved.
Shahnawaz was detained by the police for a two-day physical remand for questioning after the court granted the appeal for the approval of the arrest warrants.
The request to obtain the suspect’s fingerprints, however, was denied.
The judge said, “National Database and Registration Authority can obtain the fingerprints.”
The case
On Friday, police filed a first information report (FIR) in response to Station House Officer (SHO) Nawazish Ali Khan’s complaint under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code (which deals with penalty for murder) (PPC).
The suspect’s mother, Samina Shah, reportedly called the police on Friday, September 23, to report that her son, Shahnawaz, had killed his wife with a dumbbell. This information was included in the FIR.
The FIR states that Shah informed the police that her son was present and had covered his wife’s body. The cops then searched the residence.
According to the police complaint, Shahnawaz had locked himself in his room and when the staff broke down the door, they found blood stains on his hands and clothing.
According to the FIR, Shahnawaz confessed to striking his wife repeatedly with a dumbbell during an argument and then concealing the Canadian national’s body in the bathtub once the police had Shahnawaz.
Shahnawaz said in the FIR that the “murder weapon” was stashed beneath his bed. Police reportedly discovered blood and hair on the dumbbell after inspecting it. Later, they forwarded it to forensics.
The FIR also stated that the victim’s body had been transported to the Polyclinic Hospital for a postmortem.
