The football squad at San Jose State University reported that a player died after being hit by a school bus on Friday morning.
Around 6:51 a.m., Camdan McWright, 18, was struck and killed by a bus when he was operating an electric scooter near S. 10th and Reed streets.
According to authorities, McWright had hired the scooter. The college freshman was en route to the gym, a source said KTVU.
Whether or whether he was wearing a helmet is unknown.
“We lost an amazing young man this morning. Camdan had a bright future ahead of him and everyone in this community that had the opportunity to spend time with him knew that,” said San Jose State’s football coach Brent Brennan in a statement. “We are still trying to deal with the news of this tragedy, and appreciate everyone’s support during these difficult times.”
14 children, aged 14 to 17, were on the bus at the time of the collision, according to the San Jose Police Department, along with the driver. The San Jose Unified School District said that neither the driver nor any of the kids were wounded.
McWright, according to Jeff Konya, the athletic director, is a respected player on the football team. “Just a very intelligent, eloquent, and enthusiastic person. a valued teammate who was a freshman with a wonderful personality, “added Konya.
The bus driver had a green light as he approached the junction of 10th Street and Reed Street while he was moving along Reed Street. According to a crash report from the California Highway Patrol, McWright rode “straight into the path of the incoming bus” while driving on 10th Street. The bus driver “was unable to stop in time,” according to authorities.
According to the CHP, it was able to check the on-board bus camera to confirm that the bus had the green signal when it crashed.
The bus driver remained at the scene of the collision and assisted the police. Police did not think that using drugs or drinking alcohol contributed to the crash.
Initially, authorities reported that a bicyclist was involved in the collision, but an electric scooter was later found to be the cause.
Every time we lose a life, especially one of a young person, it is tragic, thus the CHP wants to take its time and treat everyone concerned with respect.
