Since the release of the second generation Galaxy Z Fold in 2020, Samsung has not altered the appearance of the device. So perhaps it’s not surprising that we anticipate the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 to resemble the company’s current foldable flagship quite a bit.
But a recent leak from the dependable informant Ice Universe demonstrates just how little change to anticipate. The leaker posted what appear to be frames of the current model and the upcoming Z Fold 5 side by side. There seems to be no change at all, besides the flashlight moving to the right of the camera cutout.
The leaker positioned the two frames on top of one another in a subsequent tweet. Ice Universe demonstrated with some red lines that the external screen width of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 will also not change.
In other words, this time around, we cannot anticipate a change in the aspect ratio of the handset when it is folded into a phone. In contrast to the recently unveiled Google Pixel Fold, which has a more conventional aspect ratio when folded, it will continue to be tall and thin.
It’s unfortunate because the current thin design does make typing slightly more difficult, and unfolding just to send a quick text feels like an awkward, extra step.
Nevertheless, putting aside criticisms of the closed aspect ratio, the adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” comes to mind. Given the excellent design of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, there is a compelling case for Samsung to keep making incremental tweaks. As a result of the use of a new teardrop hinge, for instance, we have already heard that the phone will be lighter and thinner this time around.
Additionally, a phone’s exterior has no bearing on its interior. We fully anticipate the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, which will give it a much-needed speed boost. According to rumored benchmarks, even the Galaxy S23 Ultra performs significantly better, indicating that Samsung has improved the performance of its ‘For Galaxy’ chips.
The design of Samsung’s foldable may be getting a little stale, but there may be some good news in store for you come next year. One leaker predicts a “major form factor change” for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6. Whatever shape that change takes, if it sounds even slightly alluring, it might be worth skipping this generation and waiting to see what Samsung has in store for 2024.
