A 14-year-old girl who went missing three months ago has been identified as the body recovered from a river in Upstate New York.
Authorities positively identified Samantha Humphrey’s remains on Monday after two fishermen saw something horrifying floating along the edge of the Mohawk River in Schenectady on Wednesday.
To ascertain the cause of death, an autopsy is being performed.
The 14-year-old went missing after leaving her home late one night three months ago, and the dismal statement by authorities puts an end to the search for her.
On November 25, 2022, just before midnight, Samantha was captured by security cameras in Riverside Park close to the Mohawk River’s shore.
In spite of this, there was no video proof showing the teen had departed the park.
A black and pink puffer jacket that like the one Samantha was known to wear was also discovered in the river in the days following her abduction, and it had what seemed to be blood on the hood.
Samantha’s family alleges that earlier that evening, she had a physical argument with her ex-boyfriend.
Samantha’s mother, Jaclyn, told her to stop seeing the ex-boyfriend after learning that he was allegedly abusive to her.
Her ex-boyfriend, nevertheless, has not been named a suspect or charged with a crime.
Two fishermen who came across the awful scene in the Mohawk River notified authorities after a laborious months-long search for the boy.
According to reports, the person found in the river was bound to a shopping cart.
Some distraught family members have claimed that they were informed that the young child was dead and have provided terrible details of how she was allegedly discovered.
“Obviously, she didn’t tie herself up in a shopping cart and sink herself,” one family member told WNYT, adding that the family “was prepared for this day.”
The family member said: “It is almost certainly a homicide.”
“When a s**t day becomes an even more terrible day, but at least now there is closure of sorts. We’ve all dreaded this day and here it is,” another family member wrote on Facebook.
“We’ve all dreaded this day and here it is.”
Investigators have not said if foul play is suspected in Samantha’s death.
