Sajal Aly, an actress and model, will play the title role in the upcoming television series version of the well-known Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada.
Umrao Jaan Ada, written by Mirza Hadi Ruswa and published in 1899, is regarded as the first Urdu novel. The narrative centres on the life of a poet and courtesan of the same name in the Indian subcontinent society and culture of the 19th century.
Presented by Abu Dhabi-based South Asian celebrity management agency, Action Consultancy, producers Hamid Hussain and Muhammad Yaqoob will bring to life this classic period-piece. Hamid Hussain spoke with a media outlet to reveal more details about the upcoming series. He stated that the series will rely “heavily on the original Urdu version of the novel, unlike the film adaptations that had taken creative liberties to fit the story into a film narrative”.
Hamid further added that “there is a lot in the novel that has never been shown in an audiovisual project”.

What’s Love Got to Do With It? is followed by This is Sajal Aly’s second significant film in which she plays a strong female lead. Umrao Jaan Ada is now under production and should shortly make its streaming platform debut.
