A BRITISH lady tragically perished while scuba diving off the coast of Albania in front of her boyfriend.
After the 29-year-old perished during the excursion off Saranda, a resort on the country’s southern coast not far from the Greek island of Corfu, a diving instructor was detained.
The woman, known locally as Rebecca Gannon, was diving with her boyfriend on Monday afternoon when she encountered difficulties.
Before others hurriedly tried to help, instructor Saimir Kushova, 45, who has been detained, apparently tried to save her and succeeded in pulling her to the surface.
Video showed seven persons carrying a body along a beach after removing it from a red and white dive boat.
According to reports, Kushova was detained on suspicion of breaking health and safety laws and illegally hiring an unlicensed diving instructor.
An employee at the diving company, Spiranca Diving, told The Telegraph: “We don’t know what happened, maybe she had a health issue.
“We’re waiting for the autopsy. We’re all very shocked. She was a qualified open water diver, she had a PADI certificate.
“She was diving on a shipwreck but was only at a depth of seven or eight metres. She came to the surface but then went down.
“Saimir has been arrested but he was the one who tried to rescue her, he gave her CPR.”
The party was reportedly diving onto an Italian cargo ship that had been sunk during World War Two.
The boyfriend was quite offended by it, and everyone else on the boat was as well, according to Gerta Brozi, who was on the boat when Rebecca got into trouble.
We simply don’t know what occurred.
Due to its underwater visibility, which varies from 15 to 30 metres, Saranda is a well-liked diving location.
‘We are helping the family of a British woman who has died in Albania and are in communication with the local authorities,’ a Foreign Office official said.
