An actress suspected of defrauding her own mother out of £120 million has died after unexpectedly falling from a fifth-floor balcony. Sabine Boghici, a 49-year-old Brazilian heiress, was discovered outside her Rio de Janeiro residence and transported to the hospital, but she died from her injuries.
Authorities looking into the model’s death on September 14 are evaluating a number of options, including suicide.
Sabine is claimed to have left a note for her wife, Rosa Stanesco Nicolau, who is currently in jail for her alleged involvement in the scheme.
The actor was the daughter of the late Jean Boghici, a major art collector in Brazil.
He was born in Romania in 1928 and migrated to Brazil with Jewish friends in 1948.
Sabine and her wife were detained last August on suspicion of defrauding Sabine’s mother Genevieve of £120 million in cash, artwork, and jewelry.
Sabine allegedly plotted against her mother in 2020 and hired for a lady to pose as a clairvoyant, according to investigators.
Geneviève was approached on the street by a woman who informed her of her daughter’s impending death.
She then took her to two more women posing as a fortune teller and a priestess who advised she pay for “spiritual work” to save her kid, according to authorities.
Geneviève began sending fortnightly transfers to the women, fearing for Sabine’s life, and the scheme appeared to be working.
In February, the mother realized she was being duped and stopped making the transactions.
The alleged swindle comprised £2.2 million in payments and nearly £1 million in jewelry.
Sabine was also charged with stealing 16 paintings worth £118 million from her late father’s collection, which included pieces by Tarsila do Amaral and Emiliano Di Cavalcanti.
Sabine was granted bail in March.
Sabine and her wife were both scheduled to appear in court today.
