Rodion Amirov Dead at 21, Cause of Death

The Maple Leafs’ former first-round draft choice and former NHL player Rodion Amirov passed away on Monday at the young age of 21, the team announced.

The Maple Leafs organization as a whole is devastated by this tragic loss, said Brendan Shanahan, president and alternate governor of the team. Throughout the course of his valiant fight, Rodion’s optimism motivated those around him, and during his brief stays in Toronto, he left a lasting impression on our team and his fans. A young man who showed so much promise was tragically taken from us so soon. As we share in their grief, we extend our sincere condolences to Rodion’s family and friends.

Cause of death:

According to news reports, he received a brain tumor diagnosis the previous year and passed away as a result.

Age:

On October 2, 2001, Rodion Amirov was born. He passed away at the age of 21.

Career:

For his time with Salavat Yulaev Ufa in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), talented Russian professional ice hockey forward Rodion Ruslanovich Amirov is best known. He had an impressive journey and was chosen by the Toronto Maple Leafs as the 15th overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Before moving on to Tolpar Ufa and the farm team of the Supreme Hockey League, Toros Neftekamsk, Amirov started his hockey career with the Salavat Yulaev Ufa development program. Later, with Salavat Yulaev Ufa, he played his first KHL game in the 2019–20 campaign.

On April 15, 2021, Amirov and the Toronto Maple Leafs, who had taken him in the draft, reached an agreement on a three-year entry-level contract. He swiftly moved to North America and was given a deal with the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, for the remainder of the 2020–21 season.

However, on February 23, 2022, Kyle Dubas, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, made a depressing speech. He acknowledged that Amirov had a brain tumor and was undergoing treatment.
