The Buffalo Sabres confirmed that Rick Jeanneret, the renowned play-by-play announcer known for his 51 years as the team’s voice, passed away on Thursday night. The family of the deceased confirmed his passing at the age of 81.

“The Buffalo Sabres mourn the life of our legendary broadcaster and a member of our family, Rick Jeanneret, who passed away today,” the team wrote in a tweet to announce his passing. “We offer his family, friends, and the entire Sabres community our deepest condolences.”

Career:

Known simply as “RJ,” John Richard Jeanneret was a well-known Canadian radio and television host who is remembered for his lengthy 51-year run as the play-by-play announcer for the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played a significant part in the Sabres Hockey Network, the team’s broadcast network. In the 1971–1972 season, Jeanneret started his radio work with the team. He continued this illustrious career through the 2021–2022 season. Surprisingly, his extended tenure made him the NHL’s play-by-play announcer with the longest tenure for a single team.

Beginning with the 1997–98 season, Jeanneret began handling both radio and television play-by-play responsibilities. Jeanneret switched to television coverage during the 1995–96 season. Within the Sabres organization and among his close friends, he was affectionately referred to as “RJ”.

Wife:

Sandra Dewberry was the wife of Rick Jeanneret. Mark, Chris, and Shelly, his stepdaughter, were his two sons.
