After more than 50 years of service, Glossop, Derbyshire, train driver Joe Crean completed his last run, and the moment was emotional as customers and friends applauded him. When Joe arrived at Manchester Piccadilly station for the last time, there was a large crowd waiting to welcome him and pay tribute to his remarkable career.
The 69-year-old, overwhelmed, wiped away tears as he said goodbye. Family and friends gathered on the platform with balloons and other congratulations items in black and white. Joe received a sash that read “Officially retired” and a certificate honoring his extensive service in the railroad industry after finishing his final run as a TransPennine Express train driver.
When Joe joined British Rail in 1971, he started his career as a steward in the dining car. He advanced through the ranks over the years to become a train driver. Joe expressed gratitude for the priceless memories he had accumulated over his half-century on the railway as he thought back on his final journey.
He was particularly appreciative to have experienced this with his family and his “railroad family.” Now that his last drive has passed, he is looking forward to spending more time with his wife Christine, his sons Gary and Shane, and the rest of his extended family.
