Moments before Rebecca Aretini fell to death while hiking a mountain trail, a woman texted a heartbreaking message to her mother.
In front of her shocked lover, 28-year-old Rebecca Aretini tragically fell down the Italian mountainside above the Monte Macina valley.
On Monday, as they were for a stroll around the mountain range, she died after falling.
The 28-year-old tragically passed away on the spot after falling hundreds of metres.
Emergency services arrived promptly after the event, but they had trouble navigating the terrain and getting to her body.
Low cloud cover made it difficult for a helicopter to manoeuvre through the challenging weather, which further complicated the rescue effort.
Rebecca, a resident of the Tuscan village of Mercatale, loved to hike and climb. What caused her fatal fall is still a mystery.
She had, in a terrible turn of events, just before the tragedy gushed about the magnificent sights she was taking in from the lofty height.
Elisabetta, her mother, received images of the breathtaking scenery from the seasoned outdoorswoman.
The heartbroken mother claimed that she is still plagued by the text discussion she had with her daughter—which, unbeknownst to her, was some of her last moments—and that it has caused her much pain.
Elisabetta sobbed: “She had recently returned from an excursion with her boyfriend from the Aosta Valley.
“She had sent me a photo of the mountains and said ‘Mom, if you could see how beautiful it is from up here’.
“I pray so much that she didn’t suffer. It still doesn’t seem real to me.”
An investigation into her death is currently underway.
Rebecca regularly quoted English poet William Blake’s renowned proverb: “Great things are done when men and mountains meet.”
