A new policy for the Matriculation and Intermediate examination system has been announced by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) of Rawalpindi.
It states that students who receive “grace marks” will have three chances over the course of four years to retake exams and raise their scores, while students who receive “less than 50% marks,” including D and E graders, would have four chances.
The updated policy also mandates that the matriculation and intermediate exams be held twice a year. Additionally, the BISE will replace the annual and supplementary tests with the first and second annual exams each year.
The second annual exams, however, will only be open to regular and private applicants for the part-II tests as well as the combination category, and starting in 2023, only part-I candidates will be able to sit for these exams.
In a related development, Sindh’s Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions (DIRPIS) has outlawed private colleges and schools from requiring parents and students to buy stationery, uniforms, textbooks, or copies from a certain vendor. They are also forbidden from requesting money from students for extracurricular activities as well as from dismissing students for fee non-payment without first contacting the DIRPIS.
The All Sindh Parents’ Association (ASPA) protested the province’s private colleges’ and schools’ unlawful admissions standards, which led to the development.
