20-month-old Quinton Simon, who had been missing for five weeks, has been identified as dead following the arrest of his mother for the child’s murder.
The FBI confirmed in a tweet on Monday that bones discovered in a landfill in Georgia last week have undergone DNA testing to prove they belong to the missing toddler.
Leilani Simon, Quinton’s mother, is thought to have killed him. On the day that police announced that remains had been located, she was taken into custody.
Leilani is accused of murder and covering up another person’s death.
She is accused of making false claims about her son and of providing incorrect information.
On October 5, Quinton’s Georgian home in Chatham County was originally reported missing.
On November 18, police discovered the remains in the Superior Landfill, but it wasn’t until a little more than a week later that it was determined they belonged to Quinton.
Will Clarke, senior supervisor of the Savannah FBI, stated on Monday that search teams from the FBI and Chatham County had discovered what they preliminary believe to be a child’s partial remains on Friday.
According to Chatham Police Chief Jeff Hadley, the evidence showed them a specific area of a nearby landfill where they think Quinton’s body was unintentionally dumped.
Hadley presumed the toddler was “thrown in a dumpster” and “unknowingly disposed of at a local landfill.”
The family was notified by the Chatham County Police Department some weeks ago that Quinton was likely dead and that Leilani was the main suspect in her son’s passing.
