Lionel Messi, the Argentine football star, was recently suspended for two weeks and fined two weeks’ wages by his club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), after traveling to Saudi Arabia without permission.
Messi had asked PSG for permission to make the trip, which was intended as a personal promotional tour, but the club refused. Despite this, Messi traveled to the country, and the PSG management punished him with a suspension and a fine.
The decision to suspend Messi demonstrates that PSG has adopted a new policy in which no player is more important than the team, a philosophy championed by the club’s president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi.
This new policy is intended to instill discipline and hold everyone in the club to the same standards. PSG’s hierarchy convened to discuss the situation, and they determined that Messi’s trip to Saudi Arabia without permission violated the club’s code of conduct.
Due to his suspension, Messi will miss two upcoming matches in Ligue 1, the French professional football league, against Troyes and Ajaccio.
He could, however, return for the match against Auxerre on May 21. It should be noted that Messi is a tourism ambassador in Saudi Arabia, and he had previously postponed two other promotional trips to the country due to his team’s defeats. PSG has declined to make a public statement on the matter.
