The eastern Libyan parliament decided to oust Prime Minister Fathi Bashagha and install Finance Minister Osama Hamada in his place.
Arab media reported that parliament spokesman Abdullah Belhaiq made the announcement regarding the suspension of Fathi Bashagha, a prime ministerial rival of the UN-recognized Government of National Unity (GNU).
Fathi Bashagha was chosen by the parliament in the east last year, but because Prime Minister Abdelhamid al-Dabibah rejected the appointment, he hasn’t been able to enter Tripoli or succeed him.
The Libyan parliament named Fathi Bashagha, a former interior minister, as the nation’s new prime minister in February 2022.
Al-Dabiba and Bashigha have been at odds for months, with several factions in control of Tripoli and the rest of the northwest siding with the former, who is supported by rebel military commander Khalifa Haftar, and the powerful eastern faction of Libya siding with the former.
Since 2014, Libya has been split into two antagonistic administrations, one in the east and one in the west, supported by different militias and regional powers. As a result of Haftar’s efforts to advance towards Tripoli, several conflicts have broken out.
Since the overthrow of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, years of negotiations, mediation, and cease-fires have failed to bring peace.
