After a protracted illness, former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf passed away at the age of 79 in a hospital in Dubai, his family announced on Sunday.
The former military leader was receiving treatment at American Hospital Dubai for amyloidosis.
The application to transfer Musharraf’s body to Pakistan was submitted by his family to the Pakistani consulate in Dubai.
In order to return Musharraf’s mortal remains to Pakistan, a special jet will depart from Nur Khan airfield and fly to Dubai.
The former president’s father is interred in Karachi, while his mother is interred in Dubai.
It was reported that Musharraf had passed away last year, but the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), the political organisation that the former president founded, denied the reports.
The news that he was critically ill or on a ventilator had been denied by the party. Musharraf’s condition was stable and he was receiving amyloidosis treatment at home, according to the statement.
The illness known as amyloidosis is brought on by the accumulation of an aberrant protein in tissues and organs, which stops them from functioning normally.
On August 11, 1943, in Delhi, British India, Musharraf was born. On April 19, 1961, he received his commission from the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul.
The former tyrant joined the special services unit after receiving his commission.
The military ruler also participated in the conflicts of 1965 and 1971.
In 1998, he was elevated to the rank of general and became chief of army staff (COAS), a position he held until 2007. On October 12, 1999, General (Ret.) Musharraf staged a coup d’état to seize control.
Musharraf remained the longest-serving president of Pakistan as he took over the country’s reins. He was elected as the president through a referendum in 2002 and remained in office till 2008.
During his time in office, the military chief agreed to the US demand for Pakistan to join the US as a front-line partner following the 9/11 tragedy.
Through the 17th Amendment to the Pakistani Constitution, he was elected to serve as president in uniform for a five-year term later in 2004.
The Lawyers’ Movement, also known as the Movement for the Restoration of Judiciary, was started in November 2007 as a result of Musharraf’s anti-constitutional actions to remove the Supreme Court judges.
On August 18, 2008, Musharraf announced his resignation as president in response to a movement organised by the political parties.
