A man was arrested in a Phoenix suburb in connection with a weekend crash that killed two people and injured 11 others.
Pedro Quintana-Lujan, 26, was arrested in Goodyear, Arizona, in connection with the crash, according to police. According to police, Quintana-Lujan faces several charges, including two counts of manslaughter. He was also charged with aggravated assault, endangerment, and causing serious injury or death by moving violation, according to local media and the Associated Press.
NPR’s request for verification was not immediately responded to by Goodyear police.
According to a police statement released on Sunday, Quintana-Lujan drove his pick-up truck into a group of cyclists while crossing the Cotton Lane Bridge in Goodyear, a community of about 100,000 people about five miles west of Phoenix.
According to police, one of the deceased victims is a local resident, while the other is from out of state. Eleven more cyclists were injured. According to police, one person is still in critical condition.
The victims’ names and ages have not yet been released.
“The Goodyear Police department is deeply saddened by this tragedy and extends condolences to the loved ones of the victims as well as to the cycling community and the community as a whole,” police said.
The location of Quitana-hometown Lujan’s was not immediately available, and it is unclear whether he has retained an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
