Following a California court’s decision that the district attorney’s office must make the materials public, the San Francisco Superior Court on Friday made footage and audio from the assault on Paul Pelosi last year available to the public.
In one of the films, police officers who arrived at Pelosi’s house on October 28, 2022, when he was attacked, are seen on body-cam footage. The video captures the commotion of the alleged incident in which David DePape, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is allegedly involved.
Paul Pelosi and DePape can both be seen hanging onto the hammer in the footage, and DePape is seen supporting Pelosi as the officers open the door.
“Drop the hammer,” the officer says.
“Uh, nope,” DePape responds.
DePape then grabbed the hammer out of Pelosi’s hand and lunged toward him. The officers rushed into the home, subduing DePape and handcuffing him.
The CD containing the court-released documents has been obtained by CNN. The court previously stated that the files also contain home security video, audio from DePape’s police interviews, and the 911 call made by Paul Pelosi while DePape was inside the house. In addition to the bodycam footage.
The movies were used as evidence in a court hearing before trial. Following a motion by a coalition of news organisations, including CNN, who claimed that the circumstances surrounding the residence of the then-Speaker of the House deserved transparency, the court decided to order the public release of the papers.
DePape’s attorneys argued that making the audio and video public would “irreparably harm” his right to a fair trial. In relation to a long list of state and federal offences, including assault and attempted murder, DePape has entered a not guilty plea.
According to court filings, Pelosi was brutally struck with a hammer in October at the couple’s house by a man assailant who was looking for the former House speaker. This incident ultimately led Nancy Pelosi to decide to resign down from House Democratic leadership.
