The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has yet another condition that needs to be met, so the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has proposed raising the base electricity tariff by Rs. 4.96 per unit.
After the federal cabinet has approved the decision, it is anticipated that the power regulator will make the official announcement. The proposed increase is subject to IMF-imposed conditions, but NEPRA is still debating whether it should be implemented all at once or gradually.
The national average base tariff will increase from its current level of Rs. 24.82 per unit to almost Rs. 30 per unit if the proposal is approved by the federal cabinet.
However, the price per unit will increase to Rs. 50 after GST and other taxes are applied to the new base tariff. Once the cabinet has given its approval, the price increase will probably be disclosed via notification.
