MOUSTAPHA SYLLA, age 21, passed away, according to Racing Club Abidjan.
The Ivorian defender passed out yesterday while competing in a match against SOL FC.
Sylla collapsed to the ground and was attended to on the field before being taken away by an ambulance.
He tragically passed away while travelling, club president Logossina Cisse confirmed to AFP.
Racing Club Abidjan posted on social media after Sylla’s tragic death was confirmed: “In mourning
“Sylla Moustapha, one of our defenders, passed away this evening following a discomfort on the ground during the RCA vs. Sol FC match.
“Management sends sincere condolences to the Biological family
“Rest in peace Moustapha.
“Rest in peace LION”.
Plenty of fans responded to Racing Club Abidjan on social media, with many commenting “rest in peace” with prayer emojis.
Prior to joining Racing Club Abidjan in September 2017, Sylla was a player for Djoliba AC in Mali.
A strategic alliance exists between Racing Club and Nice of France’s top division.
The Ligue 1 team released the following statement after learning of the tragic news: “The #OGCNice joins with emotion in the mourning of @ClubAbidjan after learning of the tragic death of its player, Sylla Moustapha, after an illness on the field this Sunday.
The club offers its condolences and unwavering support to the RCA members and their families.
They won the Ivorian championship in 2020.
