According to Jackson Brown of ABC 24 Memphis, Mikey Williams, a basketball pledge to Memphis, was detained on Thursday and is now facing five charges of assault with a dangerous weapon.
An 18-year-old who matched Williams’ description was being held at San Diego Central Jail, according to Mark Zeigler of the San Diego Union-Tribune, and is due to appear in court on April 20.
Brown claims that the San Diego Sheriff’s Office informed the ABC station in San Diego that Williams had been taken into custody.
He was freed on $50,000 bond, according to NBC San Diego’s Bill Feather and Rafael Avitabile.
Williams is one of the most well-known prep basketball players in the country, according to Zeigler, and he has a sizable social media following that has contributed to the growth of his “multimillion-dollar endorsement empire,” which includes a footwear contract with Puma.
According to the 247Sports composite rankings, he is a 5-star prospect and the No. 26 overall player in the 2023 class.
Williams is a member of head coach Penny Hardaway’s top-ranked recruiting class, which is ranked No. 7 in the nation this cycle.
For the first time under Hardaway, that group will seek to guide the Tigers through the second round of the NCAA tournament.
