Police have recovered the missing 15-year-old girl Mikella Debina who was allegedly taken from a Hawaii beach after convincing the suspected kidnapper to take her to a restaurant.
Thanks to Mikella Debina’s fast thinking, she is now recovering as police report apprehending alleged kidnapper Duncan Mahi.
The mother of the missing kid claimed that after persuading her alleged captor to take her to a restaurant, the girl was able to flee.
She attempted to exit the vehicle at the restaurant, which prompted the suspect to make an effort to stop her.
According to KHON, another man saw the incident and was able to rescue Mikella and get him to safety.
The emotional reaction of her family and friends is seen on camera by Hawaii News Now as her mother breaks the good news of her recovery to the audience in the area.
In a statement, the police said they had apprehended suspect Duncan Mahi in Hilo.
Mahi was initially described by authorities as a male, 52, with a height of 5 feet 11 inches and a weight of about 215 pounds.
At around 11.24 a.m., he was last observed on Kamehameha Avenue in Hilo. He may be driving a 2011 White Honda CRV with the Hawaii licence plate ZAE959.
Following Mikella’s alleged kidnapping earlier on Saturday at the Anaehoomalu Bay beach while she was with her boyfriend, Mahi was arrested.
Mikella’s aunt, Lauren, informed Hawaii News that a suspect approached her niece and her boyfriend when they were at the beach.
She claimed that before being kidnapped, the girl was made to tie up her boyfriend.
She said: “He had my niece tie up her boyfriend, blindfold him, and then took her.”
She added that police detected a signal from the teenager’s phone near the Kona airport about 20 miles away.
A bag with her dress inside was also found nearby.
