Prior to being shot and killed by police on Sunday, a Michigan man killed his wife, critically injured his daughter, and shot and killed the family dog.
Igor Lanis, 53, shot and wounded his 25-year-old daughter at the family’s Walled Lake house early on Sunday before engaging in a shootout with police, according to local sources. Lanis also fatally shot his 56-year-old wife.
At 4:11 in the morning, the daughter dialled 911. According to The Detroit News, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard told reporters during a press conference that her father had shot her and killed her mother.
Officers arrived to the 1200 block of Glenwood Court without knowing the precise address of the family and were chatting with a neighbour when they heard gunshots coming from the house next door, according to Bouchard.
Lanis ran out the front door with a shotgun and started shooting at the police as they closed in on the home.
Lanis was fatally shot by the police when they returned fire, according to Bouchard.
When they burst inside the house, they saw the man’s bleeding, wounded daughter trying to escape.
He claimed that she had sustained “extremely severe injuries” from being shot in the back and legs. She was taken to the hospital urgently, and she is doing well.
Her mother was discovered deceased in the residence. At least four shots had been fired at her. Her name was withheld by the police.
“This is terribly sad on so many levels,” Bouchard said.
He claimed that if police hadn’t apprehended and murdered the insane father, he might have kept up his shooting rampage.
“I think there was a danger to anybody,” Bouchard said at the press conference Sunday afternoon. “He had his keys with him so who knows where he was headed.”
The family’s Oakland County home also housed Lanis’ second child, who wasn’t at home at the time of the shooting.
Investigators did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the fatal gunshot but claimed that Lanis had become “more angry” than usual over the previous 12 months. He was not subject to any restraining orders or criminal records.
According to Bouchard, the incident marked the first police-involved shooting in the history of the Walled Lake Police Department.
According to him, no cops were hit or hurt during the gunshot exchange.
