A SAS hero who stormed the Iranian Embassy in 1980 has passed away.

Mel Parry died yesterday in Hereford after a “very long illness,” according to an ex-SAS buddy.

Mel was described as “one of the finest men to have served in the 22 SAS Regiment” by Bob Shepherd, who paid homage to him on his website on Sunday.

“I write this as he died from a very long illness today in Hereford,” said SAS veteran Bob, who spent nearly 20 years with the elite unit.

“My heart goes out to Mel’s family and close friends.

“When I joined the Regiment there were so many senior soldiers to look up to and learn from. However Mel was streets ahead in his thinking of SAS training and tactics in just about all forms.

“It was he who would set the bar high to move the Regiment forward, and look at what the young guns can do today.

“Here’s to you Mel xx.”

Author Chris Ryan also paid tribute to Mel, who was one of the ‘Balcony Boys’ in the iconic image of the raid.

“Mel, you were a gentleman and an incredible soldier,” Mr Ryan said on Twitter.

“We first met when I joined B Squadron in the early 80’s and you were the guiding light of the CT world that we recognise today. God Speed and don’t spare the HE.”

Six gunmen fighting for Arab secession in Iran’s Khuzestan Province assaulted the Iranian Embassy in South Kensington, London, on April 30, 1980.

They kidnapped workers before murdering Abbas Lavasani, the embassy’s top press officer, and Ali Akbar Samadzadeh.

Six days later, on May 5, 35 SAS forces attacked the embassy as part of Operation Nimrod, under instructions from Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Britain’s best assaulted the structure, abseiling down the front and bursting windows open in a shower of grenades and gunfire in a nail-biting operation shown live on TV.

The raid lasted only 17 minutes, and at the conclusion, five of the six shooters had been killed.

Fowzi Nejad, the only surviving terrorist, currently lives on welfare in Peckham, South London.
