The Post has heard that ESPN national baseball reporter Marly Rivera has been dismissed following an incident at Yankee Stadium in which she yelled the words “f-king c-t” against a fellow female reporter during an Aaron Judge interview.
Rivera has worked as a dugout reporter for the Home Run Derby, as well as on “Sunday Night Baseball” and as an ESPN Radio MLB postseason game analyst.
She gave a unique viewpoint to the telecasts due to her bilingualism, particularly when conversing with Latin players.
She also contributed to ESPN’s digital platforms.
“She no longer works here,” ESPN said in a statement to The Washington Post.
The event occurred at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.
Rivera and colleague reporter Ivón Gaete clashed before the Yankees-Angels game when Gaete arrived to interview Judge as well.
Rivera said she scheduled a meeting with the Yankee captain and that when she tried to notify Gaete of the meeting, Gaete disregarded her.
During the heat of the disagreement, Rivera said the words, “f–king c–t,” which were caught on video.
After the recording of the incident, Rivera tried to apologize but was rebuffed by Gaete.
“I fully accept responsibility for what I said, which I should not have,” Rivera told The Post.
“There were extenuating circumstances but that in no way is an excuse for my actions. I am a professional with a sterling reputation across baseball and I do believe that I am being singled out by a group of individuals with whom I have a long history of professional disagreements.”
Gaete is the wife of John Blundell, MLB’s Vice President of Communications.
Gaete, a freelance reporter, was in town on a Tokyo Broadcasting assignment with Shohei Ohtani.
Rivera stated that she and Blundell had issues over the years, which she believes is why this event erupted and led in her dismissal.
Blundell did not respond.
Gaete could not be reached right away.
Rivera has been with ESPN for 13 years, covering MLB — with a focus on the Yankees — and working as a writer and on-air personality for both the English language platforms and ESPN Deportes.
