Manny Pacquiao, who retired from boxing less than two years ago, is planning a sensational comeback.
The former eight-weight world champion announced his retirement from professional boxing one month after losing on points to Yordenis Ugas in August 2021.
However, the 44-year-old hopes to compete for his native Philippines at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
Abraham Tolentino, the president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, stated: “Senator Pacquiao’s camp reached out saying our Filipino ring idol wants to fight in Paris.”
The POC, the Association of Boxing Alliances, and the International Olympic Committee are already in discussions about Pacman representing the Philippines in Paris in 2024.
The Senator, however, is no longer eligible to compete for a qualification spot in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, next month, according to Tolentino.
Due to their 40-year-old age limit for all athletes, the Asian Games do not allow Pacquiao to qualify for Paris 2024 through them.
However, he still has two qualifying tournaments next year to secure his spot in the competition.
One boxing fan tweeted: “I doubt he medals but I can’t wait to see it.” Boxing fans were quick to respond to the possibility of Pacquaio competing at the upcoming Olympics.
Another person remarked, “This would be really cool! & a tremendous accomplishment if he prevails.
Someone else added, “That would be amazing for him.”
“Let’s get it, Mann,” said one. before continuing into the distance.
A second person added, “Easy dub for the PacMan.”
In an emotional interview where he discussed his aspirations to lead the Philippines, Pacquiao announced his retirement.
“My boxing career is already over,” Pacman declared.
“I’ve been in boxing for a long time, and my family has told me that enough is enough.
“I simply kept boxing because I love the sport so much. I am a fighter, and I always will be a fighter, both inside and outside the ring,” he continued.
“I am accepting your nomination as a candidate for president of the Republic of the Philippines.”
