Two adolescent pals were shot to death, and a JUVENILE suspect has been detained and accused of the crime.
After being reported missing for more than a day, Devin Clark, 18, and Lyric Woods, 14, were found dead from gunshot wounds on a hiking route in North Carolina on September 18.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office reported on Wednesday that a 17-year-old juvenile suspect, who had been identified as a main suspect weeks earlier, had been taken into custody.
“We hope this apprehension provides some relief to the families and friends of Devin and Lyric, who have experienced an excruciating loss,” Sheriff Charles Blackwood said.
“Obviously, the capture of the suspect does not restore their loved one to them.”
Due to their young age, the teen’s identify has not been made public.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the 17-year-old defendant was charged with two counts of first-degree murder after a juvenile petition was filed on September 20.
A legal filing that starts a juvenile court case and has someone appear in court is known as a juvenile petition.
Police withheld information about the shooting’s circumstances, including its purpose.
Woods, who resided in Efland and attended Cedar Ridge High School in Hillsborough, was a freshman.
Clark played wide receiver for the Eastern Alamance High School football team in Mebane as a senior.
In the days following the teens’ deaths, their friends and relatives all attended vigils and memorial services in their honour.
“Lyric was a beautiful soul on the inside and out. She is loved more than anyone will ever know. She never met a stranger and was loved by everyone. Her laugh and her glow would brighten any room,” read Lyric’s obituary.
Devin was characterised as a “passionate” teen who enjoyed playing basketball, riding motorcycles, and watching football.
Clark’s family described him as a “kind and caring brother, son, classmate, teammate, and friend to all” in his obituary.
Shant’ae Concepcion, Devin’s mother, stated in a social media video that all she wants is justice for her son and Lyric.
“He must’ve been real angry and had a lot of anger in him,” Concepcion said about the 17-year-old suspect. “I pray for his family at this time because it’s a lot for them too.”
She said in the video she wasn’t told who the suspect is, but she wants to know who he is and why this happened.
