Boxer Luis Quinones has been died following five days in a coma.
Following a title match against Jose Munoz at 140 pounds in Colombia’s city of Barranquilla, the fighter was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Early on Sunday, September 25, Quinones underwent surgery to remove a brain clot.
On Thursday, September 30, his death was declared after five days in a coma.
“Unfortunately, he lost that fight. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his entire family,” the Colombian Boxing Federation said.
“Peace in his grave and submission to God’s purposes”
“We have been partners and friends of sparring which has allowed me to know all the good things you have to offer as a person and as an athlete.”
Quinones lost for the first time in 11 fights against Munoz, having made his debut in 2018.
Brother Leonardo also paid tribute, writing on Facebook: “Now you are in the arms of your heavenly, whom you adored and served.
“I love you my brother Luis Quinones, forever in our hearts.”
This marks the third death in the ring this year.
It comes after the demise of the 26-year-old Russian Arest Saakyan and the 24-year-old South African Simiso Buthelezi.
Additionally, two boxers passed away in 2021: amateur Jordanian Rashed Al-Swaisat, 18, and Mexican woman Jeanette Zacaras Zapata, 18.
