Lieutenant General (retd) Nazir Ahmad has been named chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for a three-year term by the federal government.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, the appointment was made by the federal government following a consensus reached by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Raja Riaz.
The position of NAB chairman became vacant on February 15 following the acceptance of Aftab Sultan’s resignation, according to the notification.
After “detailed deliberations”, both sides agreed on the appointment of Lt Gen (retd) Ahmad.
According to the law ministry, the NAB chairman will serve for a “non-extendable term of three years” and will be ineligible for re-appointment.
The chairman may also be removed from office only on the grounds and in the manner specified in Article 209 of the Constitution, according to the notification.
