It is believed that her identity was brought to attention because investigators in the United Arab Emirates are still looking into a two-year-old video showed her snorting an unknown white substance at a party.
The video, which was captured during a lockdown as influencers travelled to Dubai to avoid restrictions in the UK, was made public on Sunday by The Sun.
During her detention on Monday, police forbade Kaz, 28, from calling her family out of fear. If she is found guilty of consuming or possessing narcotics, she could spend at least three months in prison and pay a fine of £5,000.
A source said: “She was looking forward to getting back to Thailand where she has been doing voluntary work and all of a sudden she is languishing in a Dubai jail.
“Everyone knows how strict they are about drugs over there. She must be terrified.
“She had only stopped off in Abu Dhabi to catch a connecting flight but her name has obviously raised a red flag.
“She was allowed to send just one email and wasn’t even allowed to make a phone call.
“She messaged one particular friend whose email she could remember and asked her to inform her family that she was OK but had been arrested for drugs offences. The arrest wasn’t because of anything she had on her.
“As far as we know it is all down to that video.”
Kaz is seen kneeling over a side table where chunky lines of powder appear to be set out in the video, which is alleged to have been shot in Dubai in November 2020 while the UK was on lockdown. Kaz is wearing an orange dress.
Kaz was racing with quite a rough partying crowd, an astonished bystander remarked. She definitely isn’t as perfect as she presents herself online.
Kaz, who finished third on Love Island in 2018 and will appear on the upcoming Channel 5 programme The Challenge, spent a significant portion of last year volunteering in Thailand.
On Sunday in Dublin, she posted her last Instagram picture.
After the arrest of a British individual, we are in communication with the local authorities, a Foreign Office spokesman said.
