A FAMILY has been saddened after a mother-of-three died suddenly after undergoing a £2,000 gastric sleeve operation in Turkey.
Leanne Michelle Leary, 38, of Oldham, traveled to Istanbul for the treatment that, if successful, would remove 80% of her stomach.
The mother had posted an elated snap from the hospital to her family’s Whatsapp chat, but her loved ones were concerned when they were unable to contact Leanne for several hours.
Family members were relieved to learn that Leanne had suffered a heart attack but was in stable condition.
However, before her loved ones could fly to Turkey’s capital, Leanne suffered a second and fatal heart attack.
The mother of three had chosen the treatment after trying to reduce baby weight after giving birth to her teenage sons.
Leanne’s family is left wondering how her condition deteriorated so swiftly, with Rochdale Coroner’s Court announcing an inquest into her death will be held in due time.
Steven Leary, Leanne’s ex-husband, claims she traveled alone to Turkey on June 30.
He stated that she had preliminary tests the next day before going under the knife later that afternoon.
“It was £2,000 for the whole package.
“I think the same procedure if you went privately in the UK was around £12,000.”
In the meantime, Steven says the ordeal has left the family devastated.
“Leanne was very bubbly and the life and soul of the party.
“She was very kind and generous and always willing to help other people even when she might need it herself.
“My son is very angry.
“It was very unexpected and you don’t expect when you pay thousands of pounds for a medical procedure that this is going to happen.
“Her daughters are heartbroken.”
“The procedure was for a gastric sleeve which is supposed to remove 80 per cent of your stomach,” he told Manchester Evening News.
