This week, Lashawn Colvin, the tragically young 37-year-old creator of the Scout Comics series Beautiful Soldiers and owner of the comic shop Comics & Geeks in Montgomery, Alabama, passed away. Lashawn Colvin is well recognised for being the first black woman in the South of the United States to own a comic book shop and serving on the board of the neighbourhood comic book conference, Urban Nerd Con.
Lashawn Colvin spoke to Bleeding Cool about that aspect of her life when Comics & Geeks first debuted in 2020, but a year ago the store briefly closed. She revealed her plans to me at the moment. “I wish to participate in events like gaming competitions, karaoke evenings, DJ nights, poetry nights, chat and sketch nights, movie nights, and anime nights, to mention a few. “COMMUNITY” is my store’s mission statement. establishing a community of pop culture and geek enthusiasts who wish to interact with one another. a place with a vibrant comic book fan community where my store is located.” The store’s online evaluations were excellent, with only more recent ones detracting from them.
She created comics like Elsewhere and edited works like Stars and the series American Dreams. In July of this year, Scout Comics decided to publish her comic Beautiful Soldiers, which she had funded on Kickstarter. I’ve been working on my debut novel since 2013,” she said. So, after spending so many years working on it, seeing it finished makes me cry. Naturally, I’m crying happy tears as I work on my book with mainstream artists like Boom Studios.
