While delivering products, an Amazon driver noticed a Long Island household was in danger and intervened to put out the fire.
On Bluebird Drive in Syosset, 22-year-old Kevin Rivera was completing his Saturday afternoon route when he noticed a fire roaring in one of the homes.
“I just rushed in, because I didn’t want nobody to die in that house,” Rivera told CBS2.
According to Rivera, other family members he observed through the front door appeared to be unaware of the fire. One man did step outside and saw the fire, but he was so astonished he just stood there, the Daily Mail reported.
Despite a language barrier, Rivera was able to get the entire family—a mother, her infant, three other kids, and a grandmother—out of the building.
He stated, “They just started crying,” when the family first witnessed the flames. They simply became emotional.
The family’s two dogs, a golden retriever and a lesser breed, were also taken by Rivera.
Amanda Johnson, a neighbour whose husband works as a firefighter for the Syosset Fire Department, videotaped Rivera’s noble deeds. She posted the video to Facebook and thanked the driver for having good judgement.
“A lot of people are stepping away from doing things today, and he stepped toward this,” she told the Daily Mail.
“It’s pretty amazing that Kevin did this.”
The consequences could have been much worse, according to experts. According to a press release from the neighbourhood police station, the family has been forced to relocate after extensive damage was done to their $1.5 million home, which was last sold in 2021.
The fire’s origin is still being looked into.
Rivera’s main concern is for the family despite the acclaim that is coming his way, including assurances from his Amazon supervisor that the corporation will do “something huge” to honour the rescue.
“I wanted to see if they were okay, and tell them I was always going to be there for them,” he said.
“To be honest, I just feel great that I did something,” Rivera added.
