The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicted on Saturday that a new wave of cold weather is likely to hit Sindh, including Karachi, starting tomorrow (Sunday), with the city’s temperature falling to 6–8 °C.
The minimum temperature in the districts of Sukkur, Ghotki, Larkana, Qambar Shahdadkot, Kashmore, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Jamshoro, Dadu, Khairpur, Tharparker, and Umerkot may drop to 2-4 °C, according to a statement from the PMD.
Benazirabad, Naushahro Feroze, Sanghar, Matiari, Mirpur Khas, Tando Muhammad Khan, and Tando Allahyar are likely to have a mercury dip of 3-5 °C, while Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Sujawal, and Badin districts are likely to experience a mercury drop of 6-8 °C.
A westerly wave is hitting top portions of the country and is expected to remain over higher areas for the next few days, according to the Met Office’s daily weather report.
The majority of the country’s plains are predicted to see cold, dry weather, but higher Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan (GB) are predicted to experience rain-thunderstorm conditions with snow covering the hills.
The minimum and highest temperatures for the past 24 hours were 10-12 °C in Karachi, 10-12 °C in Hyderabad, 5-7 °C in Sukkur, 8-10 °C and 5-7 °C in Thatta, 6-8 °C in Dadu, 6-8 °C in Mitthi, and 6-8 °C in Nawabshah.
‘Snowfall likely to hit upper parts’
The PMD predicted in a previous study that upper portions of the country would likely experience rain and precipitation in the coming days.
According to the Met Office, a westerly wave that is impacting North Balochistan is expected to grip the upper regions starting on January 20 and may last until Wednesday (Jan. 25) with brief breaks.
The weather office further said that light to moderate rain-wind with snowfall over the hills (isolated hailstorm) is expected in Kashmir, Gilgit- Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Pothohar region, Kohistan, Swat, Dir, Chitral, Manshera, Haripur, Abbottabad, Karak, Charsada, Peshawar, Nowshera, Swabi, Buner, Bajaur, Kurram, Waziristan, Kohat, Bannu, Sargodha, Mianwali, Khushab, Bhakkar, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Narowal, Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib from January 21-24 with occasional gaps.
Rain-wind (moderate to isolated heavy snowfall) is expected in Kashmir (Neelum valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, Mirpur), Murree, Galiyat, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Kohistan, Mansehra and Abbottabad from January 23-25.
