The police in Karachi have requested permission to raise the penalties for traffic violations. The traffic police are already enforcing strict adherence to the rules and regulations to maintain a smooth flow of traffic in the metropolis, according to Ahmed Nawaz Cheema, DIG Traffic Karachi.
Cheema continued by saying that they had asked the Sindh government to increase fines to reflect the increased number of traffic offences. He believes they will be accepted by the government.
Evidently, the Lahore City Traffic Police (CTP), which increased fines for unauthorised parking by 900%, served as inspiration for Karachi police. According to Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO), Muntazir Mehdi, the Lahore High Court’s tight directives govern the choice to impose fines (LHC).
Mehdi warned that the new fines will become effective from Friday, October 7.
Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Tariq Nawaz, the Anti Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC) has captured 4,211 thieves from more than 212 gangs in Karachi. After they were hurt in 19 different confrontations, the department has detained at least 24 alleged culprits. Nawaz stated that five of the offenders died.
According to SP, the department recovered 462 autos and 3,015 stolen cars between January and September 2022. He added that since the arrest of almost 4,000 street criminals, the crime rate has fallen.
SP Nawaz further emphasised the fact that the city is still being terrorised by several seasoned gangs. He stated that the police are making every effort to locate and apprehend these gangs.
