On Sunday, Karachi Kings defeated Multan Sultans by 66 runs in the 14th match of the ongoing eighth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at the National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi.
When put in to bat first, Karachi set a competitive target of 168 runs before bowling out Multan for 101 runs in 16.3 overs, thanks to a half-century from Tayyab Tahir and an outstanding performance from Tabraiz Shamsi, Shoaib Malik, and Imad Wasim.
Multan’s batters were unable to find momentum in response to the target, as Karachi’s spin bowling shone and did not allow their opponents to settle.
Shan Masood was dismissed after scoring 25 runs in 16 balls with four boundaries. After an inside edge, the batter was caught by Akif Javed.
Meanwhile, Rilee Rossouw was cleaned up by spinner Shoaib Malik’s beauty. The left-hander only managed seven runs in six balls.
David Miller was the next batter to strike out, and he was sent back by his compatriot Tabraiz Shamsi after scoring seven runs.
Veteran all-rounder Malik struck again in his third over as he sent Multan’s skipper Mohammad Rizwan (29) back to the pavilion. The wicketkeeper-batter attempted a sweep shot to the leg side, but the ball hit the edge and was caught by debutant Tayyab Tahir, who took a sensational catch.
Shamsi bowled out Khushdil Shah (4) with a brilliant delivery on a spinners’ day in Karachi.
After scoring 10 runs, the South African spinner claimed his third wicket by dismissing Usama Mir.
In the next over, skipper Imad Wasim joined the fray and bowled Carlos Braithwaite out (1).
In the same over, the left-arm spinner dismissed Akeal Hosein (2). The left-handed batter attempted a six-run home run but was caught by Ben Cutting.
Anwar Ali was the ninth batter to be struck out, scoring 12 runs on 12 balls. The right-handed batter struck out Akif.
Malik ended Multan’s innings by lbw trapping Abbas Afridi.
Malik and Shamsi each took three wickets for Karachi, while Akif and Imad each took two.
Earlier, Karachi Kings finished their allotted 20 overs with a score of 167-3.
At one point, it appeared that Karachi would post a massive total, but the Multan bowlers bowled exceptionally well in the death overs to keep the game alive.
Anwar Ali sent England opener James Vince back to the pavilion after a brief cameo of 27 runs in 12 balls.
However, Matthew Wade and Tayyab Tahir put on an impressive hundred-run partnership for the second wicket, scoring 109 runs in 83 balls.
Tahir was caught in front of the stumps by the tournament’s leading wicket-taker Ihsanullah after scoring 65 runs in 46 balls. The right-assured hander’s innings included eight fours and a six.
Meanwhile, Wade, who struggled to get going and scored 46 runs in 47 balls, was cleaned up by Ihsanullah while attempting to play a lap shot.
Skipper Imad Wasim faced only six balls but made the most of them, scoring 14 runs with a four and a six.
Multan’s bowler of choice was Ihsanullah, who finished with figures of 2-22 in four overs.
