The veteran politician Dr. Farooq Sattar was kicked out of the MQM-P last month when former coordination committee leader Tessori, who was previously accused of inciting a rift within the party, rejoined the organisation.
Tessori, a former PML-F leader and gold trader, joined MQM in 2017 and quickly rose to prominence. He left the party in December of that year, claiming issues with the leadership.
Following founder Altaf Hussain’s explosive speech on August 22, 2016, the party, which had already split into MQM-Pakistan and MQM-London, was further split into MQM-Bahadurabad and MQM-PIB over the issue of awarding a party ticket to businessman-turned-politician Kamran Tessori, who was then a deputy convener and a Dr. Sattar favourite, to run in the March 2018 Senate elections.
Dr. Sattar broke away from the Bahadurabad faction as a result of the conflict and started the MQM-PIB.
Including Tessori, three of the four MQM-P candidates for Senate seats came in last. Later, both factions came together and ran on a single platform in the general elections in July 2018.
Only four of Karachi’s 21 National Assembly seats were won by the party, nevertheless. In the months that followed, disagreements over Tessori once more resulted in Dr. Sattar’s dismissal from MQM-Bahadurabad.
There have been numerous attempts over the past four years to recruit Dr. Sattar, who has been in charge of the MQM Organization Restoration Committee since late 2018, to the MQM-P. He insisted, nonetheless, that Tessori use the same title he had before leaving the party.
Recently, everything appeared to be in place for Dr. Sattar to rejoin the MQM, but at the last minute, he claimed the MQM-P leadership was not sincere about the matter.
Dr. Sattar ran as an independent candidate in the NA-245 constituency by-election last month but was unsuccessful.
Dr Sattar contested the last month’s by-election on NA-245 constituency as an independent candidate, but lost.
